If you have the mental aptitude and dedication to be a social worker then getting a master’s degree in any field of study concerning social work is a pre-requisite. You can be a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) if you pass an LCSW exam. One may ask “Why should I pass an LCSW exam to become a social worker, isn’t a Masters Degree in Social work (MSW) enough’?” The answer is, while holding a MSW degree makes you eligible for working as a social worker offering therapy, it does not give a license like the LCSW exam does. Passing an LCSW exam makes you eligible to private practice. An LCSW title offers a lot of job opportunities in a variety of fields ranging from hospitals to government/private organizations.

It is important to mention here that anyone wanting to take an LCSW exam should at least have a MSW degree. After getting the MSW degree, the candidate is required to do at least 3000 hours or 2 years of supervised work in social work. The candidate then can sit for the LCSW exam after applying to the state board of behavioral examiners. The LCSW exam will consist of oral and written tests. In the United States, the general guidelines and age restrictions for taking the LCSW exam may vary from state to state.
